Meet our new Director of Net Zero

We’re thrilled to spotlight our new Net Zero Director, Andrew Walker, this week and congratulate him on his recent promotion. We caught up with him to chat about his role, the new challenges and his Amber highlights.

How long have you been working at Amber, and what different roles have you had?

 “I joined Amber in 2021, so have been here for 4 years, starting as Commercial Director. From here I worked closely with the Net Zero Consultancy team, and since January I moved to be the Director of Net Zero. It’s been an exciting time, and I am fully focused on leading and growing our work, aiming to help clients adapt to the changing landscape in energy and sustainability.”

Over the years, what have been the highlights been?

“I joined Amber with experience in Commercial and Growth strategies, working in a B2B-type environment. I hadn’t really worked in energy prior to starting Amber, so I’m proud of the way I was able to learn from those around me and help take the business forwards.

I get a buzz from pushing myself and taking risks so being able to lead on large projects is really satisfying, particularly some of the major renewable efforts. It’s important to also recognise how far we have come. As Amber has grown, our people have developed and we’ve improved our processes. We have more knowledge and responsibility spread across different individuals, and we can see the business being run more consistently as a result.”

What does a typical day for you look like?

“Every day is different. I tend to be working across a few various projects simultaneously. I also sit on the board, so there’s likely one day per week focusing on the wider Amber strategy and working on our goal of being a more impactful organisation.

The team is growing quickly so the clients we help are varied, meaning I’ll spend time passing on important information to our clients so they can get the most out of our services. It’s all about how we help the customer feel well-informed to make the right choice.”

Is there anything you are excited to be working on right now? 

“There is lots to be excited about. We’re helping people progress their strategies. We’re also seeing the types of professionals bringing expertise to the sustainability sector expand, so we are working with a wider cross-section of stakeholders in our clients’ which keeps us on our toes. I really enjoy the innovation space. Now we trying to figure out ways to make the existing and future energy network work for our clients, which is a joy.”
