Katie’s Journey…

As part of our International Women’s Day campaign, we’re celebrating the stories of some of the amazing women we work with. We started our series with our Net Zero Consultant, Fiona Harvey, and explored her journey paving the way for women in the sustainability space. Now, we’re celebrating the journey of our Procurement Operations Team Leader, Katie Robinson.

In this blog, Katie reflects on her career within the energy industry and how she’s managed to enhance her knowledge and professionalism through her position in our Procurement Team. She also shares with us the advice she’d tell her younger self if she had the chance.

Here’s Katie’s story…

Despite obtaining my degree in hospitality management, I made the bold decision to step away from this industry as it wasn’t always conducive to a healthy work-life balance. I transitioned into the energy sector and spent many years working for one of the UK’s largest energy suppliers. Here, I not only gained extensive industry knowledge, but learned invaluable lessons in empathy, communication, and problem-solving, all of which set a solid foundation for a career in people leadership. When opportunities for advancement were scarce, I transitioned into retail management, working for one of the UK’s largest supermarket chains. Stepping into this sector presented new challenges and experiences, enriching my skillset, but also reinforced the importance of work-life balance, particularly during challenging periods like the pandemic.

Rejoining the energy industry within Amber’s procurement team two years ago has been incredibly fulfilling, as I’ve been able to utilise my knowledge, experience, and skills to add real value to what we do, while also being empowered in my current role of Procurement Operations Team Leader to drive positive change. Together, my fantastic team and I navigate challenges, celebrate successes, and continuously strive for excellence. This collaborative spirit not only fuels my professional growth but also enriches my sense of purpose and satisfaction.

Reflecting on my journey, I’ve learned the paramount importance of adaptability, work-life balance, and finding an employer whose values align with your own. I would encourage my younger self to fearlessly embrace change and recognise that each transition presents new opportunities for growth and fulfilment.
