WALES NEWS SERVICE

At Amber, we take pride in our commitment to innovation. Recently, we’ve strengthened this commitment by partnering with technology provider, D55, and appointing Andy Thomas as our Chief Technology Officer (CTO).

Our goal has been to enhance our capacity, streamline services, and better equip Amber to provide a scalable and impactful experience for our clients.

Andy Thomas is driving Amber’s innovative change

Since becoming Amber’s new CTO, Andy Thomas has been leading an exciting transformation. Technology is now at the forefront of how we scale our services and serve our clients with agility and confidence.

His appointment marks a new chapter for us and reinforces our dedication to delivering reliability and transparency for UK businesses on their journey to Net Zero.

You can read more about Andy and his new role as CTO in our blog: Meet Andy Thomas.

A streamlined payments system

We chose D55 as our trusted technology provider because they specialise in cloud-native solutions for the energy sector. Together, we developed a new recurring payments system that improves upon our previous setup, which relied on a subscription service combined with an off-the-shelf billing tool. The payments project is one of several initiatives we’re delivering with D55, including a new cloud-native data platform and AI-driven services.

While functional, that system struggled to scale as we grew, highlighting the need for a fully integrated and more reliable way to manage direct debits.

The D55-powered solution

Working with D55, we built a lightweight serverless architecture that aligns with our cloud-first strategy.

Key features include:

  • AWS EventBridge to route payment events from Salesforce into the new system.
  • AWS Lambda functions to integrate APIs with minimal bespoke code.
  • AWS Step Functions to orchestrate workflows with automated retries.
  • CloudWatch dashboards and alarms for real-time monitoring.

The result is a fully automated payments process that reduces manual overhead, improves accuracy, and gives our clients a smoother experience.

Building the foundation for positive change

Nick Proctor, Amber’s CEO & Founder, emphasises the importance of data in the energy sector, stating:

Data is crucial. It is the foundation on which we make all our decisions. Without accurate data across buildings and businesses, making meaningful changes or positively impacting the communities we serve is impossible. This is why strategic technology partnerships, like ours with D55, are essential for confidently leveraging data.

Supporting clients on their Net Zero journey

Our Chief Operating Officer, Leanne Cinderby, explains:

We’re on a journey to help organisations move toward Net Zero. Connecting our systems and surfacing data to provide our clients with insights on how to achieve that not only helps Amber grow but, more importantly, supports our clients in reaching their Net Zero goals.

This embodies Amber’s mission: empowering clients with the right information at the right time to make significant progress toward sustainability. The new payment system is just one step, strengthening the infrastructure that supports all we do, enabling us to deliver services at scale while allowing our team to focus on making an impact.

A bright future

With Andy’s strategic vision, Nick and Leanne’s client-first leadership, and D55’s cloud-native expertise, Amber is set to grow in scale, efficiency, and impact.

We’re not stopping at payments. Together with D55, we’re rebuilding our data lake into a flexible, cloud-native microservices platform that’s primed for advanced analytics.

We’re weaving AI and machine learning into everyday workflows using Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio, helping our teams automate repetitive tasks, improve service quality, and focus on high-value work.

By surfacing deeper insights and empowering analysts with better tools, we’re redefining how data powers decisions at Amber.
